Can You Freeze A Gallon Of Milk

If needed pour off an inch of milk before freezing. Usually 1 inches is adequate. If you can t fit the entire container in the freezer consider dividing the milk into several smaller containers. Milk expands when it freezes so every gallon requires some headspace.
The sooner you can stash it in the freezer the better. You re all ready to freeze your milk simply set your labeled container in a freezer with a temperature below 0 o f c. Many types of milk will also separate and become grainy after being frozen. If freezing milk in a plastic milk gallon container or milk bag shake it well label it with the date and place it into your freezer.
Remove the milk from the freezer a couple of days before you need it as it generally takes about 2 or 3 days to fully thaw in your refrigerator. To freeze a gallon of milk all you need to do is remove about one cup of milk from the gallon to allow for expansion and then store upright in your freezer. But there is hope and it lies in your freezer. Most milk can be frozen.

Too often that gallon of milk ends up down the drain once the expiration date hits. However milk should be transferred to an air tight freezer safe container prior to freezing. If you buy extra milk with the intention of freezing there s no reason to wait. If you end up with a bit of milk about to go bad that you can t bear to see go to waste you can freeze it by the cup or even by the tablespoon. There are other ways to freeze milk that don t involve the whole gallon. If you are using a different plastic or glass container make sure it has enough headroom for the milk to expand.
Put the milk container in the freezer. Technically you can freeze milk that comes in a plastic gallon bottle but we recommend pouring your milk into two or three freezer safe plastic containers to make the thawing process a bit easier.
