Conjunctivitis may be infectious caused by a viral or bacterial infection or sterile caused by allergy or some other irritant. Tears lubricate nourish and protect your eyes and you re constantly producing tears even while asleep. Often crusty eyes in the morning are due to blepharitis. When conjunctivitis is caused by an infection it is commonly referred to as pinkeye.
When the discharge is still wet it may make the eyes sticky.
