Henry viii broke away from the catholic church so that he could divorce his first wife catherine of aragon and marry his lover anne boleyn. This meant that the pope no longer held religious authority in england and henry was free to divorce catherine. Henry took thedecision to leave the catholic church because he needed a male heir.
