The creation of the electoral college was essentially a compromise reached between the founding fathers who had debated for a long time about the correct and democratic way for the nation to elect a president every four years and avoid despotism at all costs. The first purpose was to create a buffer between the population and the selection of a president. The delegates to the 1787 constitutional convention found the question of how to choose the federal executive one of the most perplexing they faced.

The original idea was for the most knowledgeable and informed individuals from each state to select the president based solely on merit and without regard to state of origin or political party. The electoral college was created for two reasons. The founding fathers established the electoral college in the constitution in part as a compromise between the election of the president by a vote in congress and election of the president by a popular vote of qualified citizens. The electoral college was devised at the constitutional convention in 1787.

At the constitutional convention of 1787 delegates from larger states believed each state s representation in the newly proposed senate should. Their compromise is known as the electoral. Founding fathers created electoral college out of distrust for popular vote 1 of 2 view. As a part of their plan to separate powers and authority the founders created the electoral college as the method by which the people could choose their highest government leader the president while avoiding at least some of the dangers of a direct election.
