Why Do Dogs Scratch Their Beds Before Lying Down
Camila Farah
Some dogs scratch the floor before lying down to enhance the comfort of their sleeping area.
In warm areas dogs may scratch the floor to cool down. She s denning your dog has a natural instinct to create a safe space or den for herself to sleep in just like she would if she were out in the wild. Before lying down dogs often circle their beds or wherever they ve chosen to settle in for a nap. If you see your dog scratching before they lie down for a rest it is possibly because they are giving their nails a little buffing.
Many dogs repeatedly circle before settling down. When you notice your dog digging or pawing at their bed or wherever they want to settle down they are not only preparing the space for safety and comfort but also marking it as their own by releasing their distinct scent through the scent glands on the bottom of their paws. In the wild circling would result in flattening tall grass both to form a comfortable surface and to conceal the animal s position. These actions are of course futile when done today especially on a flat surface such as a modern dog bed and are therefore characterized as vestigial.
Dogs often treat a pile of blankets like a playground but they will also scratch their resting area even if no bedding is present. So why does she dig at her bed so much. Scratching the floor before lying down also helps dogs find the most comfortable position in which to rest. In tall grass going around before lying down would flatten the tall grass.

Consult a vet if you notice. This curious canine behavior dates back to prehistoric times when dogs literally had to make. Dogs tend to circle a few times before lying down but doing it too much or having trouble settling in might be a sign of pain arthritis or a neurological issue. Some nose their way under blankets to create a tunnel or cave where they can hide.
