Having migraines around the time of your period is called menstrual migraine and is caused by changing levels in the hormones made by your ovaries.
About 60 of women with migraine get a type of headache called menstrual migraines. This is why some women who take birth control pills with high amounts of estrogen experience more headaches than those that do not or those who take pills with less estrogen and more progesterone. Oestrogen is one of the chemicals hormones that control the menstrual cycle. For some women migraine attacks occur during or just before menstrual periods.
You can prevent them by taking a steady dose of estrogen throughout your menstrual cycle. Headache before period it has been observed that a woman may have headaches before or during menstruation. In fact it is not known why some women have severe symptoms some have mild ones while others have none. They are thought to occur due to hormonal imbalances.
While these hormonal changes happen in all people who menstruate some. Another less known cause of these headaches is malfunctioning platelets along with a reduction in endorphins being released into the brain and lower magnesium levels. Premenstrual headaches are usually caused by the decrease in estrogen and progesterone that happens before your period begins. The cause or trigger of the migraine is thought to be the fall in the level of oestrogen that occurs at this time in the cycle.

A dip in your estrogen levels happens before your period triggers menstrual migraine. The blood level of oestrogen falls just before a period. On average perimenopause starts four years before. Specifically it is thought that a drop in your estrogen level at this time may trigger the headache.
It is generally believed that pms migraine and depression stem from neurochemical changes within the brain. Whilst many women report that menstruation is a migraine trigger there is a specific condition known as menstrual migraine.
