The majority of indian women put a red dot between their eyebrows.
It has many reasons and significances. If the dot is in the middle of the eyes its called a bindi. The vermilion traditionally used exclusively for bindis is called sindura or sindoor. The red dot which you generally see in between the eye brows of indian women is termed as bindi.
Traditionally the red bindi or sindhur was worn only by the married hindu women but now it has become a part of women s fashion. However young girls are free to wear bindi of any color. They generally use dots bindi rather than the lines and larger marks worn by men. The red dots signify their martial status married women put a red dot while unmarried girls put a small black dot on their forehead.
It also symbolizes love. Traditionally the red dot is made up of bovine blood and dirt. A remnant of an old aryan marriage tradition although the bindi is worn on an everyday basis by many women it is also worn in the hindu marriage ceremony. After marriage many women choose to wear a red bindi which has led to the misconception that it is only married hindu women who wear one.
