Needless to say i am a fan of this fruit which is why upon my return to the united states i was somewhat shocked to find out that growing the black currant in the united states has been illegal for almost a century in most of the country due to the fact the berry bushes were deemed a threat to the us lumber industry as they can act as a vector for white pine blister rust. The nutrient rich berries were banned in 1911 because they were thought to produce a fungus that could damage pine trees. The growing and importation of currants were banned in new york and other parts of the united states for more than half a century because they were thought to help spread a fungus that threatened the timber industry. It might seem extreme but this measure was necessary to save the logging industry at that time.
