Why is antarctica colder than the arctic.
The south pole is colder than the north pole. However the south pole is a lot colder than the north pole. As we know temperature drops with the increase in elevation the south pole is colder being at a greater height. What makes the south pole so much colder than the north pole is that it sits on top of a very thick ice sheet which itself sits on a continent.
However the south pole is colder than the north pole due to the following reasons. Both the arctic north pole and the antarctic south pole are cold because they don t get any direct sunlight. The surface of the ice that floats on the ocean is just a foot above the sea level. It is because the north pole is present in the middle of the arctic ocean.
First since antarctica is a giant landmass it receives very little heat from the ocean. The arctic isn t quite as cold as antarctica and here are some reasons why. The north pole ranges from 32 f to 40 f and the south pole annually varies from 18 f to 76 f. Why is one pole colder than the other.

This is because the south pole is located on a continent 98 of which is covered with an ice sheet nearly two miles thick. Average temperatures at the south pole are minus 25 in summer and minus 90 in winter. Antarctica the south pole is land surrounded by oceans while the arctic surrounding the north pole is an ocean almost completely surrounded by continents and greenland. There is a difference and one pole is colder than the other pole. The south pole is perpetually covered in snow which means that its ice cover is permanent and covers all of antarctica. Solar energy heats the equator consistently throughout the year. The geographic south pole lies on the continent of antarctica while the geographic north pole lies on the arctic ocean. If you compare this to the south pole it is situated on a thick ice sheet.
The south pole is colder than the north pole by about 30 degrees f. The climate at the south pole is about 65 degrees colder than at the north pole. The colder poles receive less solar energy due to earth s curvature and axial tilt. There are two key reasons why antarctica is colder than the arctic.
The equator temperature averages above 64 f all year. On the contrary the north pole contains a permanent ice cover in greenland only. The surface of the ice sheet at the south pole is. A massive ice sheet covers almost all of the antarctic continent.
