Why Do Babies Have More Bones Than Adults
Camila Farah
There is no debate that babies have a significantly higher number of bones than adults.
The reason behind this is attributed to cartilage. When babies are born they have over 270 bones in their body but by the time they reach adult hood they have 206. A baby s skeleton is mostly made up of cartilage. Others have answered this already.
So almost 1 3rd of their bones fuse together. At this point you ll have 206 bones that are as big as they will ever be. The difference between the total number of adult and baby bones is a relatively simple explanation. In fact the process of ossification and bone growth won t stop until early adulthood usually around the age of 25.
But something else happens which explains why 300 bones at birth become 206 bones by adulthood. So what happened to the rest. Infants whether human or not are not born at their final dimensions. This is because babies have more cartilage than bone.

Adults typically have 206 bones but infants have a combination of 300 bone and cartilage structures. For example the skull is in several sections and the bones in the hands and feet are not joined properly. I think babies are born with 300 bones but by the time they are adults they have 206 bones. First in the case of humans as others have stated the skull bones of human ba.
As your baby grows into childhood much of that cartilage will be replaced by actual bone. Why do babies have more bones than adults. Is there any significant reason that babies need all these bones or is this just a mystery in our anatomy. As you may know when a baby is born and for some time afterwards they have a soft spot on their head.
In addition newborns have cartilage that turns into bone over time. Babies have more bones than adults because as they grow up some of the bones fuse together to form one bone.
