A hurricane s eye is calm because this quiet center is the hub around which the section of strongest winds forms.
The wall of winds that swirl around this quiet respite are the polar opposite of this eye. Because the hurricane is spinning and moving it creates a centrifugal force which is projected outwards. Thus the sudden calm is indeed an almost spiritual or perhaps eerie experience. The eye is so calm because the now strong surface winds that converge towards the center never reach it.
The coriolis force deflects the wind slightly away from the center causing the wind to rotate around the center of the hurricane the eye wall leaving the exact center the eye calm. This process creates calm conditions inside the eye and stormy conditions along the eyewall according to nasa. It is surrounded by the eyewall a ring of towering thunderstorms where the most severe weather and highest winds occur. On land the center of the eye is by far the calmest part of the storm with skies mostly clear of clouds wind and rain.
