In the second world war the civilian population had to cope with extensive rationing of food and clothing as well as severe shortages of other consumer goods as economic resources were diverted towards the war effort. That s kind of like what has happened with a lot of the things people ate during world war ii. During world war ii all sorts of essential and non essential foods were rationed as well as clothing furniture and petrol. There were restrictions on imported foods and vouchers for sugar coffee meats cheeses and some canned goods.
It aimed to curb inflation reduce total consumer spending and limit impending shortages of essential goods. To make the british weak the germans tried to cut off supplies of food and other goods. Rationing during the period of world war 2 was the mean of ensuring that there was a fair distribution of food and commodities equally among people. Rationing was introduced to manage shortages and control civilian consumption.
After war was declared in september 1939 the british government had to cut down on the amount of food it brought in from abroad as german submarines started attacking british supply ships. The government found it necessary to ration food gas and even clothing during that time. There was a worry that this would lead to shortages of food supplies in the shops so the british government decided to introduce a system of rationing. It began after the start of ww2 with petrol and later included other goods such as butter sugar and bacon. With not a single person unaffected by the war rationing meant sacrifices for all.
