Why Do Ostriches Stick Their Heads In The Ground

To make sure that the eggs are evenly heated they occasionally stick their heads into the nest to rotate the eggs which makes it look like they re trying to hide hence the myth. And the most likely ostriches lay their eggs in shallow holes or depressions in the ground and ostriches reaching in to turn the eggs numerous times a day which they have to do ma. They do pick up small stones for their gizzards however they do not put their heads in the ground. What makes it seem like that is the color of ostrich s neck and head.
In this position he can potentially blend into the terrain though his head never actually goes underground source. The legend could also be attributed to the fact that a nesting ostrich who senses danger may flop down with his head and neck flat against the ground in hopes that potential predators won t spot him. As flightless birds ostriches are unable to build nests in trees so they lay their eggs in holes dug in the ground. I for one welcome our new ostrich overlords.
This action is especially common when the ostrich is attempting to protect its eggs. The first thing to consider is that ostriches have small heads relative to the size of their body. This type of behavior is common in animals. This is important because from a distance ostriches nibbling at food on the ground may appear to have their heads in the dirt.

Another possible source of the idea could be the scientific fact that when threatened the ostrich will fall forward in the sand and lay its head to the ground so that its body will resemble a bush to passing predators. Although they are not the brightest bulbs in the socket. From a distance all that s visible is their large body leading some to think that the rest may be buried. Instead they dig holes in the sand to keep their eggs.
Likewise ostriches often lie down flat on the ground when they feel threatened. So when they bring their heads close to the ground to nibble at the grass they may look like they are disappearing entirely. Also ostriches don t build nests for their eggs. When the animal thinks that there is danger around it will go down on the ground and rest its head and neck on the ground.
