Why Do We Give Up Something For Lent
Olivia Luz
The idea behind giving up something for lent is based on luke 9 23 then he said to them all.
10 i want to know christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. Or we might give up a bad habit such as smoking as a way of positively turning our life back toward what god wants for us. Often that which is given up is a favorite food or activity. As a kid i might give up chocolate for lent eat a peanut butter cup the friday after ash wednesday and welp that would be the end of that until next year.
Giving up something for lent is a powerful way to imitate the sacrifices of jesus in the desert and to unite our heart with his in prayer. To call us for a moment or the twinkling of an eye to a life. To remind us of others who lack what we take for granted. It intentionally coincides with lent and at then end of the period the items are donated helping others in need.
Many christians will use lent to commit to fasting choosing to abstain from certain foods habits or vices. The practice of giving up something for lent is meant to be understood as a sacrifice beginning on ash wednesday and lasting until resurrection day easter sunday. So essentially it s about self denial carrying our cross and following jesus. Giving up something for lent is ultimately a form of fasting.

One variation is collecting 40 items rather than 40 bags. 7 meatless meals for lent. Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Christians choose something they desire and enjoy and impose self denial of it for the 40 days of lent.
It was easier to cut and run. Every day people tackle a different area of the house and fill a bag with unwanted times with the intent of simplifying their lives. So why give up something anything we re used to during the 40 days of lent. We can deprive ourselves of some small pleasure or indulgence and offer that sacrifice up to god.
The fasting and abstinence is meant to mirror the experience of jesus christ and his.
